Merry Christmas!

Friends and Family,

Hello All! Sorry we've been away so long - it's been a busy time for us as I'm sure it has for you as well. I hope you all have had a wonderful holiday. I have so enjoyed getting some time to spend at home with just the boys! Today it is almost 1:30 and I am still in my pajamas and Matthew and I have just watched TV and read stories - how great is that! In his stocking he got a personalized Scooby Doo story book that he is just entranced with - we have read it over and over. :) He has just requested another reading - this may be a short entry!

Let's see ~ an update...we went with Scott and Shannon down to Auburn for our annual visit to see Christmas lights with Buddy and Teresa. We went back to Callaway Gardens this year - the last time we were there it was VERY cold, but this year the weather cooperated, the wagon ride was great, Matthew was old enough to really enjoy it and the lights were really beautiful. We also managed to track down Santa at the Auburn Mall where Matthew informed him that he wanted a Weasel Ball and an airplane from Cracker Barrel and asked him what kind of snack he wanted and whether he liked white or chocolate milk. I think Santa was a little taken aback. :)

The next week we picked out a Christmas tree. Here Matthew makes sure this one has "good branches for ornaments."

Next Matthew makes sure it has a good smell!

We decide this is the tree for us and so Matthew helps wrap it up to take it home!

The tree was very thirsty!

I asked Matthew if he was ready to decorate the tree and he said, "I don't think so, I'm puffed out!"

We did finally get our tree decorated however and ready for Christmas morning! You can see several of the ornaments are ones that Matthew has made in school. He's only 4 - we're going to need a bigger tree!

We had Christmas with my family the weekend before Christmas at Oak Mountain where we rented a cabin for all the out of town family. It was also orienteering weekend at the state park, so several family members ran in various courses. We had Christmas breakfast and opened gifts. All 6 siblings had met in Montgomery a couple weekends before to have portraits taken as a surprise gift for Mom and Granny Hazel. Was she ever surprised! It has been a long time since all six of us have been together for a formal portrait. We had a great time together - it turned out to be a beautiful, warm weekend. It was also the weekend my students were performing To Kill A Mockingbird at HMS, so I was pulling double duty, but Mom graciously kept Matthew (a burden, I know!)

Christmas Eve we attended the candlelight service at First Pres. This is one of my favorite services. Our new head of staff, Shannon Webster is outstanding and this Christmas Eve meditation was no exception. You can read all First Pres' sermons, etc. online at www.firstpresbyterianbirmingham.org. We then headed over to Andy's parents for dinner - the traditional meal here is Cajun - red beans and rice, jambalaya and shrimp gumbo - it is always wonderful. :) Yum! This was our Christmas with Shannon as well, since she was headed off to Boston to her parents for Christmas Day.

We had a great Christmas morning - Matthew was "super excited" (he says) to see his Thomas Roundhouse, which is just what he wanted, along with a Weasel Ball (it chases it's own tail - go figure!) and an airplane he had seen at Cracker Barrel and was just dying for. Apparently Santa shops there also. Whew. Santa took all the fudge and white milk we left him and Matthew cleaned up the crumbs later that afternoon. Matthew was also very excited about a new blue bike horn that is VERY loud - everyone in the neighborhood will be thrilled with this new toy that currently doubles as a train whistle.

We are enjoying a little bit of rest and relaxation before we head back to school and work after the holidays. We hope you all had a wonderful holiday. Check out the new slide shows! Let us know how you are. Come visit or call when you can. We love you all.

Busy Holiday Season

Well, we are keeping busy! We had Aunt Jojo and Uncle Bradley in town all weekend which was lots of fun! Matthew, Jo, Bradley and I traveled on Saturday morning down to the tiny town of Santuck which is best known for its massive (and i mean MASSIVE) flea market/arts and crafts fair/yard sale extravaganza. We met my Mom and Timothy there and had a good time looking around - we even found a bargain! A bow and arrow that Matthew simply could not live without for the low, low price of $1. :) It is amazingly still intact as I type and Matthew dances around the house singing the song from Peter Pan, "we're following the leader, the leader, the leader..." Later Saturday we watched Timothy and the rest of his Boy Scout troop participate in the Eclectic Christmas Parade, which boasted 2 Santas - one was fake, Matthew tells me. Sunday was super busy with holiday plans. I can barely believe December is already here.

Tonight my tiny Birmingham Children's Choir Training Singers had their holiday concert. They are just about the cutest things you have ever seen. After dealing with "too cool" middle schoolers all day, I just forget how tiny first graders can be. So it is so fun to play with these babies once a week! But, once a week is quite enough for me - I'm definitely not an elementary teacher at heart! They, along with their older Concert Choir counterparts, caroled at the historic Alabama Theater last week and sang at the Jr. League Market a couple weekends ago. You can see photos of those events here: http://www.slide.com/r/BO9PpYCLxD80_FqIJ50O8dzowwbAsaBz?previous_view=lt_embedded_url

Check out the BCC blog here: http://www.birminghamchildrenschoir.blogspot.com/ or learn more about the BCC at their website: http://www.birminghamchildrenschoir.org/.

Andy had a Samford basketball game tonight - the girl's team is looking very good this year. They open conference play tonight with an in-state rival, so Andy will come in any minute berating me for not coming by after my concert, I'm sure. (sorry, honey - my feet were tired!)

This is my last week of graduate class for this semester so I am taking some time to breathe this week! We open To Kill A Mockingbird on Wednesday of next week, so not too much time, but a little. :)

I hope you guys can all relax and take time to enjoy each other. We love you all.

Thanksgiving Part Two

Andy wanted to title this post "Beating Bama (part two)" but since I am not an advocate of worrying about who we beat, I thought we could just maybe say War Eagle! Matthew has walked around the house this week chanting "It's great to be an Auburn Tiger...." He really got into Tiger Walk. :) We enjoyed seeing the Vest/Parrish side of the family the second half of the Thanksgiving holiday and spent most of that time pep rallying, tailgating or watching the ballgame! Whew...what a long day! Matthew made a new friend - Tex and Cindy's son Josh was so sweet to play with him - you can see pics of them on the slide show. Matthew also really enjoyed playing with "Aunt Reesy" and Buddy and Teresa's dogs! He definitely did not want to come home and in fact stalled a good half an hour throwing pennies into the fountain out front of the house and taking pictures with Buddy and Teresa on Sunday morning to avoid getting in the car with Mom and Dad. :)

Have a great week. We love you! CAM

Thanksgiving Part One

We enjoyed seeing all of you who were at Granny Garrett's over the Thanksgiving holiday. For those of you who aren't aware, I am one of 6 kids and my Dad is as well. My Dad and all of his siblings gathered for Thanksgiving at my grandmother's in TN with their respective families. It is always a big crowd and lots of fun with cousins, aunts, uncles and extended family. These days we're mostly grown up :) and get rooms at the Holiday Inn but I was remembering holidays when I was a kid and there would be 5 or 6 pallets on the living room or den floor full of my siblings or cousins. Matthew had a great time letting everyone feed him an enormous amount of pie (he needs some cousins....to balance his attention seeking efforts) and building a questionably designed but well assembled paper airplane with Aunt Meg. Here are a couple of my favorite photos - you can see more on the slide show. If you click the slide show, it will take you to Picasa Web where you can manipulate the photos in various ways. If you have some photos you'd like to share, email them to me and I'll add them to Picasa and the blog. We love you! C, A and M

Thanks and Giving

As we enter this week of Thanksgiving, we are often surrounded by symbols of this season. Matthew has brought home several pieces of art focused on turkeys, cornucopias, gourds, pilgrims, family, etc. Today, for the second time this week, in a lecture a speaker asked us to stop and think about what we were the most thankful for in our personal and professional lives. Most of you probably can recount similar incindents.

Last week I was fortunate to be invited to attend a session with a professional dance troupe, AXIS. I attended both a teacher workshop and a public performance. AXIS is a dance company dedicated to the production of high quality modern dance through dancers with and without disabilities. It was truly an incredible experience and I was unprepared for my reaction to the performance, even after going through the workshop. The idea that dance is an art form that should be accessible to everyone, regardless of ability does not seem foreign to me, and that is why I was so open and excited to attend and participate in the activities. Meeting the dancers, gleaning ideas and taking part in roundtable discussions about how to incorporate these ideas with my students were all wonderful experiences. I attended the public performance in my role as an arts mentor at the Alys Stephens Center (a local venue) with two of my mentees and a fellow mentor and as I said, was totally unprepared for what I saw. The pieces were so incredibly moving. If you asked me to list the three worst disabilities I could think of, I'm not sure what they would be, but I am pretty sure I would never think to list, "someone who had no fingers" but when a dancer who had no fingers or feet danced onstage, I thought of that in a completely new way. As a pianist, I can't imagine not making my art. I'm sure you can't imagine not doing the things you do with your fingers every day. This person was a gymnast in her previous life (she was disabled at age 21.) And she is a beautiful dancer today. If AXIS is ever on tour in your area, you should check them out - they reside in the Bay Area, CA. Check out their website at http://www.axisdance.org/.

I am thankful for each and every one of you ~ my friends and family. You make our lives complete in your own way. Some of you we see often and know well, some of you occasionally and you know more about us through this blog than ever before! My Aunt Teresa posted once on here about family and I liked that post (you can go back and read that) and I really like a guy named John Jacobson (no, not john jacob jingleheimer schmidt) who says, "You're all valuable, we need everybody." And that sums it up for me...we need everybody. I love you. Happy Thanksgiving.

Beating Bama (part I)

So here's a little trivia: They were the first team to lose a regular season basketball game to Samford in the Pete Hanna Center. Who is the University of Alabama, Alex?!
True enough, the Samford women's team christened the new arena with a 48-46 win over the Crimson Tide last week, starting a week of excellent public address announcing that also led to victories over Princeton and East Tennessee State.
Matthew was on hand for the big game, and periodically ran down a few rows to give score updates to one of his teachers, Miss Melanie. (She also happens to be the coach's wife, but was nonetheless excited to get the news from Matthew that "Samford is winning!") Matthew also got to enjoy basketball last week with his Mom, Papaw, Uncle Scott and Shannon. He summoned up the courage to give a "high five" to Spike the Bulldog mascot, and used his considerable cuteness to score free popcorn from Mr. David, the concessions manager.
Sunday night, Mom and Dad raced up to Guntersville to pick up MVP, who had spent an entire 36 hours away from home. We missed him badly, but Matthew was not homesick in the least, since he'd been with his Aunt Jo-Jo and Uncle Bradley, and had spent the day at a horse show!
On the way home, the conversation somehow turned to Santa Claus and potential gifts. Mom mentioned that she would get online and find out when Santa would be visiting our area, so Matthew could tell 'ol St. Nick (not the football coach) what he wants. Matthew replied with the advice: "You should try going to Christmas dot com."
Well, Thanksgiving week is here - and I understand there is a football game coming up soon - so to sum up the holiday, Samford, beating Alabama, and horses: War Turkey Dogs, Hay!
Love y'all, and see you soon!

Drum Roll Please...

Homewood City Schools are out for the next entire week and some of my students are waiting (oh so patiently!) for these results, so I told them I would post them on the blog...here you go ladies!

The 2008 All State Choir participants are...Soprano 2 - Savannah Wright and Liza Spencer! Alto - Kinsley Collins! Bravo to all of you who auditioned - this was quite an undertaking and I am incredibly proud of you. Have a great week off and I will see you back on Monday. - Mrs. P :)

Call of the Wild

Monday was a school holiday for Homewood City Schools and so Matthew and I headed to the Birmingham Zoo as it was a beautiful day to be outside. Many of the animals were more active than we remembered from several of our summer visits and we enjoyed seeing the white tiger that we had missed the last time we were here as well! Matthew was disappointed that the Butterfly Encounter was closed until Spring, but it was a great opportunity for a science lesson about the cycle of life! Ha - wishful thinking, Mom! Anyway, we had a great day and enjoyed some down time from the busy weekend. We love you all and look forward to seeing you during the holidays ahead.

Thanks Memaw and Papa!

On Friday, my Mom and Dad were in town and we met for lunch. Matthew was very disappointed that he was unable to join us, but super excited that they left him a "prize cookie" from Savage's, our favorite bakery! He ate all around the edges and saved the "Auburn part" for last. :)

At dinner Friday evening Matthew entertained us with tales about his friend Lily, who apparently plans to marry him. Another girl, Jordin drew him a card with a picture of them both in pink dresses because she "really likes him a lot and wants to marry him." Matthew says he doesn't want to marry either of them and just wants to play trains or let them chase him on the playground. Man, the girls are so young to start being worried about liking boys - craziness. Hmmm.

Busy Times

Hello everyone! Sorry for the lack of recent updates. We are extremely busy this week. Andy had 2 Monday night basketball games and a Thursday night football game at Samford, Cherith's kids open the King and I at SCT this Friday evening and her school kids' Veteran's Day Program performance is Friday morning! So, in addition to all of our "regular" activities, we're keeping late nights.
The weather change has been very sudden here - we went from this beautiful but hot summer to realizing we never really dress appropriately for winter in Alabama until it is freezing out! And then it is typically gone! It seems earlier this year, however, or maybe I am just not prepared yet. Jo and I went to Christmas Village last week and I could not believe it was holiday time already.
Here are some pictures from a recent weekend at a Samford football game, Matthew with a friend, Antonio. They spent the entire day climbing trees, eating, climbing the rock wall, sliding down the "big hill" (A Samford tradition), jumping in the numerous bouncy things, eating, running, etc. By the end of the day you can see what they looked like. :) Boys are so fun.
We love you all and hope to see you soon. Let us know how you are. Have a peaceful weekend.

DC revisited

Since we talked about our Washington trip, I just wanted to share a photo from one of our students (one of Matthew's new girlfriends) Emily. She took this picture on one of the dark, dreary, rainy nights of the Vietnam Memorial. I thought the "points of light" effect is pretty cool.

One of the traditions of the media convention is a "shootout," in which photojournalism students have 3 or 4 hours to go out into the city and take all the pictures they can, competing for the best shots. The winners and other good photos are posted here .

It's amazing what they came up with on a dark, rainy day & night.

Geaux Bulldogs!

So it's my turn to do the blog, and tell you about our weekend. For me, it was a lot of football. PA for the Samford vs. Jacksonville State football game. The title of this entry is a reference to Acadian influence at Samford, of course.

Well, we lost. We were expected to lose, and we came through...but played well. And most importantly, the announcer got most of the names right.

Meanwhile, Matthew and Cherith were in Alabaster to continue working on the childrens' production of "The King and I". (I told her it should be "working on the king and me," but she disagrees.) Once again, Matthew helped in decorating the set. Practically since he was born, Matthew has been able to memorize any song he hears. So at any time during the day, he is likely to start up with "Getting to Know You," or my favorite from The King and Me, "We Are Siamese if You Please." And speaking of show tunes, just a couple of hours ago, Matthew was very excited to hear "Shipoopi" on "The Family Guy," and he joined in.

We also had a nice visit this weekend from Jo"Aunt JoJo"Anna, in town for the conference of the LVTA, or LAVT, or some combination of those letters that make up a veterinary organization. After going to church this morning, Cherith and Jo went to the Christmas Village show at the BJCC. They spent a lot of money, which I guess will turn out good for you in about 7 weeks or so.

Right now, as we're in bed and about to sleep fast before an early start to Monday, we're watching "American Beauty." What a great movie! And a good reminder of just how lucky we are for all the "stuff" we have, and more importantly, each other.

Love y'all...

Spider Update

You'll all be happy to know that our spider is growing well. He is now at least 3 times his orginal size and still going. We discovered a "Grow a Fish" as well in our package and so now the spider has a friend.

Matthew had a great day at school - it was field trip day. His class went to the Children's Theater to see Peter and the Wolf with the Alabama Symphony. Matthew really enjoyed it, although now he is telling me his very favorite part of the day was when he and his friends yelled really loud on the bus as they went through the tunnel.

Have a great night!

Thanks Tom and Jane!

Tuesdays are late nights for us as I direct with the Birmingham Children's Choir and Andy advises the Samford Crimson newspaper staff, so we pulled into the carport after dark to see a package propped up on our side door. Matthew was excited to see that it was addressed to him and even more excited to see a "Grow A Spider" inside, just in time for Halloween! It was so late, I made him wait to try it out, so as soon as we made it through the door tonight he headed straight for it. We read the directions....it calls for room temperature water..."Mom, do we have that kind of water?" We located that kind of water and our spider was ready to grow! He's already started his transformation - we'll update periodically....
This package was from Jane and Tom Deinek, our family in Detroit. For those of you who aren't familiar with Tom, some background information is in order. Tom is married to my Dad's sister, Jane. He is an only child who has apparently mastered the art of giving spectacularly appropriate gifts, especially to children. Specific incidents stand out more than others, like the Christmas he brought the obnoxiously loud and brightly lit laser type guns for all the kids. Every adult was secretly slipping him dirty looks but the kids loved them! Then there was the year that Tom drew my name (remember when we used to draw names for gifts?) and he gave me this pink Barbie doll bath tub and I remember that he got down on the floor and played with me for what seemed like hours - I distinctly remember that he argued with me over who got to pour the bubble solution in. Isn't it odd the things your brain keeps? Anyway, Tom is great at gifts - Matthew already has several great gifts from Tom and Jane (my favorite is the handmade/painted cars) so THANK YOU for this wonderful Halloween surprise that we did manage to receive, even in remote Alabama! We love you all - Happy Halloween.

Back In Town

Most of you know Matthew has never flown before, in part due to the problems we've had with his ears. But, with clear tubes and fingers crossed, we headed to DC last week for his very first flight. Of course, it wouldn't be complete without a delay...a 3 hour delay for a fuel leak. Add another 2 hours for a radio malfunction on the plane that was bringing the mechanics to fix our plane and 5 hours later we were on our way. Hmmm. Matthew thought this was the greatest trip ever! What could be better than watching nonstop planes come and go from a building with floor to ceiling windows? What we would do without wi-fi I'm not sure, but thank goodness for noggin.com and Pirates of the Caribbean online!

We had a great trip to the College Media Advisor's Convention in Washington DC - Andy took students from Samford's radio station and newspaper staff.

Matthew loves the Air and Space Museum - he remembered it from a previous trip there in the Spring. We spent part of every day there this trip. Here he is manning the navigation controls of the USS Enterprise, an aircraft carrier. He was very concerned that I was in his way as I was trying to take this photo.

Matthew flies his paper airplane in a contest at the Air and Space Museum. He made it through three rounds before his center of gravity and center of lift didn't match enough to allow his airplane to continue to fly through the hoop at the increasing distance. :) :) :)

Sword fighting in Dupont Circle with Erin, Andy's former student - now at Georgetown.

I thought you would enjoy this pic from a couple months ago when Granny and Meg were down and we went out riding around. In the background is Granny's high school - Ensley High School. This school is no longer used - the building is used for other things, but Granny remembered several things about it and we drove around looking at how she must have walked to school from Fairview and where her classes would have been.

We love you all and hope you are well. See you soon! Cherith, Andy and Matthew

What This Town Needs....

OK, there are a couple of new polls on the blog - we are planning to be in Tennessee for Thanksgiving Day to celebrate with the Garrett clan. Our "grand plan" then is to head south to Auburn to cheer our Tigers on to victory in the Iron Bown with the rest of the Vest/Parrish family. So, we hope we see you at one of those places that weekend. Although the polls don't work exactly like we envisioned and allow us to see WHO is coming, it is good to get an idea of numbers, so go ahead and put your vote in - it only lets you vote once per computer.

So, the odd jobs that are getting done around our house....yeah, well the monorail set getting put up is one, right? Ha! Andy and I bought this for Matthew when we were at Disney several years ago, maybe before he was even born. Definitely when we were in that stage of buying for the baby that we had no idea how to take care of. :) But thought would be cool to play with! In 5 years! And he so is!

Well, if a pumpkin is a drum, then a monorail support is DEFINITELY a trumpet. He's a what, he's a what, he's a music man....!

We are off for a few days. Andy has a media advisor's conference in Washington DC and Matthew and I are going with him. We'll update when we return. We love you all and hope you are well. :) Cherith, Andy and Matthew.

Old News

We've had a busy weekend with Samford's homecoming for Andy, a choral concert for Cherith, a playday and a stomach bug for Matthew. We'll update later with pix from the weekend but meanwhile thought you might enjoy these from earlier in the year. Here is one of MVP and Auntie JoJo in Destin in July. Matthew really turned into a beach bum this summer and that hair just got lighter and lighter! He discovered sand crabbing after dark (who knew there were so many? I'm NEVER going walking on the beach again after dark!) and "surfing" with his little body-board.

Here is one from January of 07 in Manchester. This is a shell that Matthew and Meg found on a walk down in the Fort. Matthew was very proud of this find and brought it all the way home to Alabama to use for show and tell at school. Of course all his friends and teachers were suitably impressed. :)

More from the visit in January. I remember that this was the week just before Granny fell and broke her hip. In fact, we left on Sunday and she fell the following Tuesday. On the way home from this trip, Andy and I were remarking on how well she was recovering from her stroke and how great she was doing physically while we were visiting. You can see from these photos that she was alert and doing very well, even better than when we were all together for Thanksgiving of 06.

Matthew asked Granny if he could take this photo of her hands. It's one of my favorites.

Hope you have all had a restful weekend. Take care - we love you all. Cherith, Andy and Matthew. :)

Pumpkin Pie

OK, Laurel wins the prize! Way to go, Laurel, our first family blog poster!!
Last Saturday, we drove south of Birmingham about 30 miles to Harpersville to the Old Baker Farm to pick pumpkins and picnic with Memaw, Papa, Granny Hazel and Timothy. We played in the hay maze, tried our best (unsuccesfully) to find a way through the corn maze, rode on the wagon out to the pumpkin patch, played on "hay mountain" and picnicked under the trees. It was a great day with the family and Matthew chose this white pumpkin with which to make a pie. He was absolutely determined to make a pie with it - nothing else would do. He really loves to bake (like his Dad) and we had a great time learning how to cook real pumpkin. I had never scraped real pumpkin out of the skin before, only out the Libby's can - ha! But this was WAY better!

Matthew realizes he can use the pumpkin as a drum, but reluctantly agrees that if he wants a pie, he will have to relinquish his musical instrument.

Scooping seeds! Did you know that the inside of a white pumpkin is somewhat green?!
It's a pie! A yummy pie! We'll bake some more at Thanksgiving. We love you all - see you soon. Cherith, Andy and Matthew. :)

Family Update

In an effort to keep our family updated with all of you, I thought I would try to manage my time more efficiently and force all of you to utilize the tools I KNOW you have and actually use the net to check in with us! Somehow I use my email to stay in contact with everyone around me except my family, so I am going to use the only thing I know will work as bait to make you log on and read this - photos of MVP. :) Hopefully you all will find this a useful and fun way to keep up with our family and let us know how you are as well! It would be great if each of you in turn created your own family blog and we could all keep up with each other even with our hectic schedules. (What a novel idea!)

Here are the most recent things going on in our lives:

  • Matthew is 4 1/2 and in his last year of pre-school (he's loving it - today a policeman named "Officer Dan" came and gave him a badge - it was waaaaay cool)

  • Matthew is continually entranced by airplanes and can tell from far away what type of engine it is - we travel past the airport twice a day - this is good news for him :)

  • Andy is still managing the radio station at Samford and trying to teach good journalism, although a student recently reported that an alumni who died, who had been a prominent good-deeder, very active in social circles was a socialist (instead of a socialite) *sigh*

  • Andy's Crohn's is well-managed and under control with the study drug, for which we are VERY grateful!! And word on the street is that the drug is very close to being available on the market, for which we are not quite so grateful, since that means that we will probably have a significant out of pocket expense, so any feet dragging pull at the FDA that you may have - go right ahead and pull!! :)

  • Andy is announcing football and basketball games for Samford Athletics again this fall

  • Cherith has taken a new job at Homewood Middle which is turning out to be great! It is less than a mile from Matthew's school and about 3 miles from Andy's school.

  • Cherith is directing 2 shows this fall - To Kill A Mockingbird at HMS and The King and I at SCT. Both are casts of middle school kids. As usual, she can't get enough to do, and is taking 2 graduate classes as well - Choir and Statistics in Measurement and Evaluation.

  • Cherith directs the Training Singers for the Birmingham Children's Choir on Tuesday nights. This is a group of 1st - 3rd graders. They are so cute! And little! :)

  • In our spare time we (with the help of my GREAT sisters Jo and Esther and brother in law Bradley) are painting and doing other odd jobs around our house to get it ready to sell. We have enjoyed living here for 8 1/2 years, but it is time to leave! We have outgrown this place.

Well, I'm sure there is much more to tell, but that is pretty much the daily routine. We would love to hear from all of you. I hear there is a move to get everyone to Manchester for Thanksgiving. We will be there with homemade pumpkin pie! (More about that in our next post!!)

We love you all!
